A Domain and Hosting: What’s the Difference?
A domain is a human-readable internet address. Hosting provides the infrastructure that serves your website. You usually need both for a public website, but they are different services.
What does a domain do?
A name such as technotrix.in is easier to remember than a numerical network address. Domain Name System (DNS) records connect names to the services that use them. A domain registration alone does not create a website. See MDN’s explanation of domain names.
What should you clarify in a quote?
- Who controls the domain account, and how renewals are handled.
- Which hosting plan and website platform are involved.
- Who maintains backups and how recovery is arranged.
- Whether email accounts, certificates and maintenance are included.
- What information is needed if moving an existing website.
Keep account access private
Describe your current provider and intended website in the initial enquiry. Do not send account passwords, recovery codes or payment details. Agree an appropriate access process directly if work proceeds.
Where should you start?
For a domain or hosting discussion, choose Domain & Hosting. If you need the website itself, explore Website Development. Specific packages and terms must be confirmed with TECHNOTRIX.
